Why Death Matters
Season 02: Episode 01 is here!
Season Two is here!
After a season of rest, repair, and deep internal shifting, we’re back with Season Two of the podcast. And we’re beginning exactly where everything ends: with death.
But not just the death that comes at the end of a heartbeat.
In this episode as a prelude to this next season, Jamie and Joan explore this concept: Death is a name for constant surrender.
This season, we’re inviting death into the room in all the ways it shows up—in our identities, our relationships, our sense of self, our bodies, and our stories.
This is a season about endings, transformations, and the bardo spaces in between.
In this first episode, Joan and Jamie reflect on the personal and seasonal transitions that shaped their winter. There’s talk of health challenges, time away from screens, and the strange recalibration that happens when the body insists on slowness. There’s also a growing sense of alignment—like talking about death isn’t just relevant, but necessary.
What happens when we stop pretending we’re not going to die?
What opens when we soften into the truth that everything is always changing, that parts of us are always in flux, always dissolving?
There’s grief in these questions, of course. But there’s also life.
Episode One traces the early contours of Season Two’s terrain:
- the body's quiet wisdom around death
- the subtle ways we bargain with grief
- the identity shifts that feel like small personal extinctions
- the spiritual practice of surrender
- the tension between resistance and release
The concept of bardo—the liminal space between death and rebirth—emerges as a grounding metaphor. And as the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear that death, far from being a single moment, is a teacher we’re all in relationship with all the time.
Whether you're currently moving through loss, navigating uncertainty, or simply curious about how acknowledging death might change how you live—this episode is for you.
We hope you’ll sit with us in this first conversation, and let it open something in you.
